Sundae Roast is a welcoming coffee, brunch and ice cream spot in the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere, proudly owned by the Atkinson family, whose connection to the area and its ice cream heritage spans generations.

The building was previously home to Toys & Hobbies, a much-loved family toy shop that also served ice cream from the family's own Windermere Ice Cream Company. The story began in the 1920s when Ernest Atkinson first started churning ice cream by hand, supplying the local community until the early 1930s. Nearly a century later, that heritage continues. In 2001, Ernest's family opened the Windermere Ice Cream shop, delighting visitors with up to 36 flavours of locally made ice cream.

Today, the building has entered its next chapter as Sundae Roast, a relaxed coffee, brunch and ice cream destination celebrating the very best of local produce. We proudly serve artisan coffee from Rins Coffee Roasters, locally made Windermere ice cream, freshly prepared brunches, toasted ciabattas and homemade favourites, using quality, locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.

Our menu is all about bringing people together over great food. From signature sundaes and freshly cooked waffles to fluffy pancakes, indulgent chocolate-covered strawberries from our chocolate taps, and hearty brunch dishes, there's something for every craving. At weekends, we also serve one of our most unique treats: a sweet Yorkshire pudding served with your choice of Windermere ice cream, toppings and sauce. Whether you're joining us for breakfast, lunch, an afternoon coffee or a well-earned dessert, we've got you covered. Everything on the menu is also available to take away, making it easy to enjoy a taste of Sundae Roast while exploring Bowness.

With welcoming seating downstairs and comfortable booth seating upstairs, there's plenty of space to relax, catch up with friends or take a break after a day on the lake. We're dog friendly too, so four-legged explorers are more than welcome to join you.
